A Cotswolds village often cited as one of England’s most beautiful is feeling itself a bit crowded by coach tours that bring as many as 20,000 visitors a weekend to their town of 600 residents.
Bibury Parish Council is asking for more restriction on the huge coaches. The Gloucestershire County Council had already implemented a ‘temporary traffic management trial’ with parking restrictions and other measures to “prevent accidents and ensure Bibury remains a welcoming and safe destination for all.”
But the restrictions that include designated drop-off zones for coach passengers and penalties for non-compliance may not be enough for locals, who are calling for visitors to come in smaller vehicles, saying “As a consequence of the lack of infrastructure, road narrowness and the disruptive and unsafe location of the two existing coach bays, it is a fact that Bibury is not a suitable destination for larger coaches.”
And, just maybe, Bibury may be a bit tired of being a “welcoming and safe destination for all.”
