Copenhagen sets hotel limits

While some cities try to limit short-term apartment rentals in the city center, Copenhagen is taking a different direction, banning new hotel construction there in hopes of spreading visitors around the city.

The proposal is supported by an alliance of parties from left to right that hold 38 of the 55 seats on the city council.

New hotels could be built in outer parts of the city, or by special exception at major squares that have major transit hubs.

“It’s important that tourists are in the whole city, because we don’t want to end up like other big European cities where parts of the city end up like tourist backdrops with no life or everyday soul,”  Mayor Sisse Marie Welling wrote in a press statement.
