It’s just a bit more than three months from the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the events organizers say they are on track to be ready by the February 6th opening ceremonies. “We can see the finish line, but even if the schedule is met, we can’t waste a single day before kickoff,” according to games president Giovanni Malago.
For the first time, the Games are officially in two cities, Milan and Cortina, in order to take advantage of existing venues. In fact, by using fairly far-flung existing venues, the organizers say they have kept costs reasonable, with only two of the 13 venues built new for these games compared with huge building programs of the past. “This is the first time that we’re not changing a landscape to organize the Olympic Games, but rather changing the organization of the Games based on the landscape,” according to the organizers.
Because of the wide range of venues and a lack of fast transportation among some of them, the organizers are also planning medal ceremonies each night in three different cities so that visitors and athletes at remoter locations won’t feel left out.
