Chimp Haven is only one hour from my home. It is the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, located in Keithville, Louisiana, just south of Shreveport. Nearly 300 chimps, many of whom were formerly used in biomedical research, live there. The 200-acre forested sanctuary allows the chimps to finally enjoy many of the experiences they would have in the wild.
It was founded in 1995 to meet the need for long-term chimpanzee care, and soon after, Caddo Parish donated the land that would bring the sanctuary’s vision to life.
I can say with no hesitation that you, your children, and your grandchildren will come away with a new appreciation for the chimpanzees and Chimp Haven.
When Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace, said, “I saw for myself in the short time I’ve been here that they were moving around in small groups, that some of them chose to be inside where it was warmer, some of them chose to sit on the platforms they have, some of them wanted to be out in the forest and climb the trees. And so for chimpanzees in captivity, it’s pretty well perfect.”
Chimpanzee Discovery Day was held earlier this month so the public could visit and better understand this sanctuary’s critical mission. The discovery days are held twice a year.
Staff members can also arrange private tours for a significant donation. (Check the website for future discovery days and private tour information.)
Terrific find! What a great destination this would be to visit with kids.
I went with my granddaughter. It teaches so many lessons, and watching the chimpanzees interact is fascinating!
