Cannes has become the second major port on the French Riviera to set limits for cruise ships and cruise passengers, following nearby Nice, which imposed limits earlier this year.
In Cannes, famed for its annual film festival, ships carrying more than a thousand passengers will be banned from docking, and there will be a limit of 6,000 passengers coming ashore each day from ships. Ships over the size limit could still anchor elsewhere and land passengers by smaller boat.
“Cannes has become a major cruise ship destination, with real economic benefits. It’s not about banning cruise ships, but about regulating, organizing, setting guidelines for their navigation,” Mayor David Lisnard said in a statement. Cruise operators have called the restrictions harmful to both destinations and passengers.
