Cat cafes have long been a thing in cities across the globe, but the world of coffee and pastry hasn’t been as welcoming to dogs, but Brussels now has two cafes catering to canines and their human companions.
Woof Cafe opened over the summer, and the Dogood Cafe is now in a soft-opening phase in the Ixelles area of the city. The cafes welcome dogs and their owners, as well as people who just want to mingle with dogs while enjoying a coffee. The cafes have resident dogs as well as those visiting with owners.
There are two separate menus to choose from, one for humans and one for dogs, with the latter featuring a unique twist on the ‘puppuccino’ — an espresso cup filled with whipped coconut cream. Other options on the ‘dog menu’ include a sweet potato waffle and a Greek yoghurt-filled éclair. Both menus avoid items such as chocolate that are poisonous for dogs.
Dogood’s owner, who visited dog cafes in Paris and Lille for inspiration, operates a canine physiotherapy clinic next door. The cafe will also host homeless dogs from shelters and will work with canine adoption groups to try to match up potential owners with pets.
