Today I’m featuring another of Venice’s islands, this time Torcello and its bridge without handrails. Known as the Ponte del Diavolo, it is one of only two bridges without handrails remaining in the whole of Venice.
The other is in Cannaregio and is called the Ponte di Chiodo. Although both bridges now appear unusual and perhaps a little dangerous, most bridges here were built without railings until the 18th century.
It would be interesting to know how many people (especially drunks) have taken a dive into the canal from that bridge……
Ha, probably a lot as there is a posh and expensive restaurant close by!
