Zurich to get cable-car lake crossing

Zurich's Cantonal Bank (ZKB) wants to celebrate its 150th anniversary by building a cable-car crossing to link Zurich with its Landwiese suburb.

The cable car, which would open in 2020 in time to celebrate ZKB's 1870 founding, would be able to carry 2,000 passengers an hour in 14 gondolas, with 360° views over the lake. The bank says it already has support from city and canton authorities. The bank is majority owned by Zurich government.

Construction would cost 40-60 million Swiss francs, or about $42-62 million, which the bank would pay. Operating costs would come from tolls of around $5. Planning calls for the cable car to operate for 5 years; no word on what would happen after that.

The bank says it wants to "build on the pioneering spirit of its founders" and make people think about traffic issues that are "part of the major social questions of today and tomorrow. The project would also include an 'adventure garden' and park at the Landwiese end.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
