Yayoi Kusama at New York Botanical Garden

Fans of Japanese-American artist Yayoi Kusama will no doubt have instantly recognized her signature dots and the pumpkin motif she has used in numbers of her works. Those who are not familiar with her work will have a great chance to change that this spring at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, NY.

In a giant indoor-outdoor exhibit that will run from May 9 to November 1 the works on display, many of them site-specific, will include four new projects, including an 'Infinity Mirrored Room' called Inside the Heart, an interactive greenhouse that invites visitors can participate in Kusama’s “obliteration” art by applying stickers and “coral-colored blossoms” to the inside of the structure, as well as two giant structures, one of them a 13-foot high 'biomorphic' form, with the typical polka dots, called "I Want to Fly to the Universe."

Tickets for the show, which includes admission for the gorgeous gardens as well, are sadly steep ($35 for adults, $33 for seniors and students, $15 for children) but NYBG is expecting sellout crowds for its timed tickets.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
