Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#63)

WITW63

Too cold to stay in Iceland any longer! Gumbo's off again, this time to a pleasant park with an unusual statue—think of all the things it might mean! But one thing it means for sure: Gumbo knows where he is, but it's up to you to puzzle it out with your fellow guessers and see if you can identify Where in the World is TravelGumbo!

THE RULES

  1. Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments...
  2. If you absolutely know where it is....please give others a couple of days to work on it before you pounce. If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it to suggestions@travelgumbo.com and we'll publish it Sunday night...right or wrong!
  3. To post here, you need to be  a member...but that's free and easy.  Just click HERE

So, exactly where is Gumbo today?  Please be as specific as possible.

My first thought was a garden tool - shovel maybe.  On the far left is a sign that says in part, Hola..then what? Could be meaningless for our purposes, or not.  It does look political in nature and it appears they were on a budget when they installed it, a plain concrete-looking base.  Temporary, maybe?  Who knows who will be in power next election.

Maybe Spain, or that left-leaning France.

The detail-seekers at work! So, here's a little help.

1. Hola...don't take it seriously; if it were a hint I would have fudged it.

2. It's not temporary, but so far no one has mentioned the wooden portion...which is.

3. I know where it is, but documenting more about it is not easy!

Since there are VWs virtually everywhere on the planet, including a '69 in my garage, not sure that, in itself, narrows down the possibilities.  Except to the extent that I'm pretty sure it wasn't taken anywhere near my garage.

VW Bugs were also manufactured in Mexico and with it's historically vocal socialist contingent, maybe Mexico is a possibility.  But I suspect Rod is more likely to be right about the general vicinity.

I see hands on a baseball bat and that the stands are for a person to climb and put their hand next. If that's true, then it seems too humorous for Eastern Europe. Maybe Cuba? Also, if it's to be climbed the fact that there aren't several handrails or safety devices, seems to mean it's not in the US. - Lynn

Looks like its some kind of park.  Still favor a flag being raised over a bat held up -- maybe the gamekeeper can clarify with a clue.  If a flag, it has overtones of a revolution and I'd favor France then, probably Paris.  The minibleacher invites the tykes to come -- play along with the French Revolution game.  PHeymont has not shown us the mock-up of the guillotine beside this display (if it exists).

Don't think the right to play baseball was part of the French Revolution. But I'm guessing it is hands around the bat and who will win the turn to go first. Alameda Central in Mexico City. Found a picture with more stable climbing platform - though I like the idea of  the bleacher stands.

The sharpshooters are getting too good! Lynn Millar nailed it, and a more complete piece will appear Sunday, before the inevitable next puzzle on Monday.

PS...While Hola (part of a name that actually appears Germanic) was no real clue, the VW was...it's painted the bright green of Mexico City taxis. In 2009, when this image was made, most of the taxis were Beetles.
