Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#107)

 WITW 107a

Like Moses before him, Gumbo has spent time wandering in the wilderness.  Today's puzzle photo was snapped when Gumbo came across some remnants of civilization during his quest.  Interesting place.  Anyone know where this might be?

THE RULES

  1. Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments...
  2. If you absolutely know where it is....please give others a couple of days to work on it  before you pounce.  If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it to suggestions@travelgumbo.com and we'll publish it Saturday night...
  3. To post here, you need to be  a member...but that's free and easy.  Just click HERE

Appears to be brick, but fairly crude and non-uniform brick. Could it have once been covered with, say, stucco or cement?

High proportion of mortar to brick reminds me of what I learned from Nova's show on Hagia Sophia: the high proportion may make it more able to resist earthquake damage. Could this be in an area with a lot of earthquakes?

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations

I guess it's time for a clue.

Pheymont, that material used in construction is actually the native rock from the region, not bricks.  The area is not known for earthquakes, although I'm sure they get a slight earth trembling from time to time because the region is just a day's drive from a major seismically active area.

Jonathan, you're in the right general area......

I believe it's time for some more clues.

While this structure is quite isolated in the southwestern desert, it's less than a one hour drive from a major tourist destination.

While it seems (to my eye) almost ancient, it has yet to reach its 100th birthday

These are the last clues for this puzzle.  The reveal will be published Tuesday morning.

A slightly different view of the structure in question.  It is west of Los Alamos, but I won't tell you how far away it is.
