Where in the World is Gumbo? 21.0

IMG_6304

As we know, Gumbo is a fan of architecture.  Today Gumbo decided to shift focus from a sunrise to visit this rather unusual building.

Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments...but if you absolutely know where it is....please give others a couple of days to work on it before you pounce. If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it tosuggestions@travelgumbo.com and we'll publish it Friday night...right or wrong!

To post here, you need to be  a member...but that's free and easy. Just click HERE

So exactly where is Gumbo today?

The mystery and waiting are over.  The puzzle has been solved by PortMoresby.  Here is her answer: "Tangalla Bay Hotel, Tangalle, Sri Lanka."  I'll post the discussion for this on Tuesday.

Another travel puzzle will be up very soon.

So far we've only had one stab at the solution, by member Andredeya (Florida- Miami Design Preservation League-  Beach Patrol Headquarters Building).  Appreciate the effort, Andredeya, but that is not the correct solution.

So I'm offering up two additional clues today:

WITW 2

This is a view of the interior of the hotel, again with strong nautical influence

WITW 3

And this is the view south from the hotel's pool.  The next piece of real estate to the south is Antarctica.

So, where in the world is Gumbo?

Well, I didn't expect anyone to twig it quite that fast, and it's not just because of a polar route. Although we usually don't think of Hawaii extending north of Kauai, in fact the state includes the entire Hawaiian Ridge/Emperor Seamount chain, running up to the Aleutian trench, just off Alaska's Aleutian islands. Mostly underwater, mostly administered by Federal agencies as a preservation/conservation area.

Kure Atoll and Green Island is the northernmost habitable place in Hawaii, and it's halfway to Alaska...and 5 days by boat from Honolulu. And it's the world's northern-most coral growth.

I was thinking West Indies...but I couldn't identify the flag (and I looked at a LOT of flags, yesterday!). If it's in the U.S., it must be Florida or California, because that's where beaches and palms might come together...
