At a time when Qantas, Emirates, Singapore and others are competing for longest-route honors, Canada's WestJet has gone the other way, with a route that will be the shortest 'true' trans-Atlantic route.
The discount carrier, taking advantage of its new 737 MAX planes, will fly next summer season from Canada's easternmost major airport, Halifax, to one of Europe's westernmost, Dublin—a route about the same distance as New York to Los Angeles.
WestJet has previously served London and Paris from Halifax, but this will be even shorter. The only trans-Atlantic routes with a close claim would be from Boston or Quebec to Rekyjavik, which is officially in Europe, but not really, in most people's minds.
