Maybe you’ve thought about it but have never visited Minnesota before. In which case, it’s a perfect time to head to this state for a summer break. There are plenty of spots around the lakes to enjoy solo, as a group, or as a family.

While the lakes certainly are a good a place as any to situate yourself, there’s no rule that you cannot spend time at several over an extended trip. They also provide access to different activities, depending on what’s available there.

Here are a few suggestions for water lovers and people who revel in the great outdoors.

Watersports on the Lakes

The calm waters of many of Minnesota’s lakes are ideal for swimming, standup paddleboarding, and other water-bound activities. Depending on how adventurous you or your group of travelers are, you can have a blast out on the water.

Sometimes, facilities include the option to rent watercraft, such as a kayak if you didn’t bring one of your own. Be aware that some lakes don’t have road access and only rely on nearby footpaths, so carrying your own water sports gear might require a little bit of elbow grease.

Also, it’s a good idea to check online what facilities are available first, as the lakes tend to be a distance away from well-equipped outfitters or Walmart stores.

A Spot of Fishing?

It would almost seem a shame to drive to one or more of the lakes in Minnesota and never try a spot of fishing.

There are plenty of excellent fishing resorts that cater specifically to anglers who wish to vacation and enjoy the water access and plentiful supply of fish.

The resorts will have facilities that suit anglers, but it also pays to come equipped with a few of your best rods and reliable line that won’t let you down in a pinch. Also, ensure you are properly licensed to fish in Minnesotan waters (there are licenses for people from out of state and locals too).

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Area

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a wonderful conservation area that’s managed by the U.S. Forest Service and has recently reopened.

Along with the fishing, the area is known to keep people happily canoeing in Pose Lake (which has impressive sunsets). The lake cannot be accessed by road, so it doesn’t get overpopulated. Finding your idyllic spot isn’t difficult here.

There’s also wilderness to explore and numerous hiking trails to keep your fitness up and see more of the surrounding area.

Voyageurs National Park

The Voyageurs National Park also gets a worthy mention because it features waterways, several lakes of its very own, along with forested land and interesting outcroppings.

If you wish to get out on foot, then hiking around the Kettle Falls will provide an excellent day out along with views of the Falls and a nearby dam. Situated at the top of Minnesota, it’s a national park that includes many travel options for lake lovers.

The main problem with visiting Minnesota is deciding where to spend your time. It’s usually best to narrow that down based on the activities you prefer to do, and then which resorts are nearest to those preferred activities.
