Virtual Food Hall debuts at Raleigh

Raleigh-Durham Airport is trying out a new way to get food into the hands of passengers heading for the gates: a virtual food hall that takes orders on a tablet and uses an app to open locker doors to deliver the food.

For those who remember the old Automat restaurants, it's a bit familiar: A big active kitchen out of sight, delivering food into the lockers from behind. What's different is that instead of each locker being pre-loaded with a specific dish, these are filled to order.

The idea is to eliminate some of the long food lines caused partly be staff shortages by using the hidden 'ghost kitchen' to prepare signature dishes from half-a-dozen or more franchises at the airport, including burgers, Asian, coffee shop, pizza and more.

The project, called GetReef, is set up in Terminal 2 with two banks of lockers but could be expanded if successful.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
