Vienna has a new answer to its 8 pm closing of shops and groceries: a convenience store loaded into vending machines to get around local laws against 24-hour shops.
The store, called a Späti, literally a late shop, is in the 5th district, but may spawn more if it catches on as it has in Berlin; the Vienna store was modeled on them by DJ and event promoter DJ Mosaken and his friend Christopher Neudeck.
The store carries a variety of items like vodka, award winning regional wine, Tegernseer beer, soft drinks, crisps, instant ramen noodles, salt, UHT milk and condoms. The owners say they will adjust the stock based on what people want.
While it's the first Späti in the city, the vending machine idea isn't new; there are beer vending machines scattered around Vienna, and a "Foodie Fridge" that offers lemonade and home-cooked hot meals through a machine.
