Verona: Christmas accident damages Roman arena

A slip up while removing a huge steel arc from the ancient Roman arena in Verona, Italy has caused serious damage to some banks of seats in the arena which is the home of Verona's annual opera festival.

The arc, attached to a Christmas star outside the arena, has been part of the city's Christmas decorations since 1984. It is lifted into place by cranes each year and then removed the same way, much as opera scenery is taken in and out.

This time, though, the maneuver was not routine; the 82-metre-long arc, weighing 78 tons went out of control and repeatedly banged into the 2000-year-old arena. Although some experts claimed the damage is 'irreversible,' the city expects to begin repairs almost immediately.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
