Venice: Don't paddle your own canoe

In a move that may have a mixture of motives—traffic safety, congestion control and a little bit of anti-tourism—Venice is imposing new restrictions on small craft on its major canals.

Recreational boats such as canoes, kayaks, pedalos and paddleboards, which were previously banned from the Grand Canal, the Cannaregio Canal and other waterbus routes during peak traffic (8 am to 3 pm, 1 pm weekends) are now banned completely from those routes, unless owned for personal use by Venetians; for them the time restrictions still apply.

The restrictions, which date to a fatal collision between a ferry and a gondola in 2013, will apply to other waterways in the city as well between 7 am and 5 pm, and without the locals-only restriction.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
