Update: Australian border reopening

Australia is one step closer to reopening its borders to international visitors, although no firm date has yet been set.

New South Wales government ministers will press their federal counterparts to allow the state to open up to overseas students and tourists as a matter of urgency after the state hit its much-anticipated 80 per cent double dose vaccination target on Saturday.

Newly elected state premier Dominic Perrottet said “summer in NSW is looking good” as he confirmed NSW would further ease restrictions on Monday for fully vaccinated people.

The jab that took NSW to its 80 per cent target was delivered on Saturday and 93 per cent of people over 16 have now received at least one jab.

Perrottet announced on Friday that NSW would open its borders on November 1 to allow all residents to travel freely overseas and return – provided they were fully vaccinated – and he wanted tourists and students to be given the same freedoms.

But the decision to allow tourists and students to enter is still to be made by the federal government and Prime Minister Scott Morrison said priority would be given to the approximately 40,000 Australians still looking to return home.

Trade and Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said overnight from London the government hoped to have students, tourists and working holidaymakers freely entering Australia by Christmas.

Qantas has brought forward its international flight schedule for the third time in as many weeks and is selling tickets to London and Los Angeles from November 1.
