Unfortunate elk stops Oslo Metro

Everywhere there are stories of bears, deer and raccoons moving closer into cities, but Oslo has a story that might take the cake. Last week, service was halted on Metro Line 3 when an elk fell from a bridge onto the tracks.

Admittedly, the Gjonnes station, where the accident happened is not the city center, but it's not the primeval forest either. The wandering animal is believed to have followed a snowy road onto the pedestrian overpass and then been spooked by something that led to it leaping a barrier. It was seriously injured and was put down by animal authorities.

An Oslo journalist who happened to be on the platform caught the photo above.

Two days earlier, another elk died in a bridge accident in Hamar; it had wandered onto a 12-metre high bridge. When people approached it to take pictures, it apparently panicked and fell.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
