Britain is set to get a spectacular new cycling route this fall, the 150-mile West Kernow Way in Cornwall that combines bridle paths, byways, stretches of quiet country roads and paths to provide a safe and nearly car-free ride over four days.
Sponsored by bike enthusiast organization Cycling UK, the new route starts and ends in the coastal resort town of Penzance, and takes in Land's End, Britain's westernmost point, Lizard Point, the most southerly spot as well as St. Michael's Mount, England's island castle answer to France's Mont Saint-Michel. Along with several castles and ancient monuments, it also takes a nod at more recent history with stops at the tin mine engine houses along Botallack cliffs.
Cycling UK is issuing a website, map and guide to go with the opening. The organization last year initiated another route, the 220-mile King Alfred's Way that starts and ends at his statue in Winchester. Alfred was a ninth-century king of Wessex; the route crosses parts of Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire and Surrey.
