Tuk-tuks production moving to Porto

In a sharp reverse of the usual story in which an American or European manufacturer shifts production to Asia and then imports the products, a company is moving its production of tuk-tuks from Thailand to Portugal.

E-tuk, one of many makers of the three-wheeled jitneys that some think of as a powered rickshaw, will set up a factory in Santo Tirso, near Porto to make the vehicles which are widely used in tourism and delivery services. They are derived from Japanese designs first developed in the 1930s.

The company's move to a 6,000 square metre plant in Portugal was prompted in part by the rising cost of shipping from Asia.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
