Tokyo to help visitors 'get out of town'

Tokyo continues to enjoy a huge tourism boom, with over half of Japan's 24 million visitors in 2016 making Tokyo their target. Now the city is making plans to share the wealth by helping other areas get in on the flow.

In particular, the Tokyo metropolitan government is working to help disaster-hit regions that have suffered both serious losses and drops in visitors. Most visitors in the past have stayed with the 'Golden Route' of Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto. Tokyo is now offering tourism routes that start with Tokyo and stretch out to 17 other prefectures.

A special website shows transportation information for the itineraries in several languages, and describes the attractions to be found on the 3-day itineraries that have been planned. It also includes personal traveler reviews of the destination sites.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
