Tips on how to explore Split

You find yourself in Split, one of the most beautiful cities of Croatia, and you ask yourself what to do, where to go, what to see?  Here are some suggestions.

Split is situated on the Adriatic coast, so you should go to the beach of course! The most famous beach of Split is Bačvice, but it's usually very crowded.  So if you want to enjoy the peace and quiet you should go to one of other beaches like Ovčice, Žnjan, Bene or Kašjuni.  Strange names, yes, but you wont be sorry as it's a paradise on earth.

A good rule in travel is to get to know how the locals live and what they love about their city. In Split, the Riva is their favorite place.  What's more beautiful than taking a long stroll by the sea and drinking coffee with your friends for hours.  It's a must do!  It's also a place where where many events like concert take place. Another place locals enjoy meeting at is the street market or Pazar.

If you're a more active person and like sports you should definitively visit Marjan Hill. You can run, ride a bike, walk, whatever you like.   Football is very important for people of Split and their football club, Hajduk, is the most important thing in the world to many of them.  The team plays in stadium Poljud and when there is a game, it's packed with locals watching Hajduk play. On the beach at Bačvice it's popular to play the game Picigin, played by usually five players on a sandy beach in shallow water with a small ball.

Other beautiful places in Split are: 1) Diocletian's Palace, the most famous site in the city, built during Roman Empire rule.  2) Cathedral of St. Duje and Bell Tower, the symbol of Split. 3) Procurativa or Republic Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Split that comes alive in the summer with concerts and other events.  4) Another attractive square is Pjaca or People's Square, surrounded by stunning buildings. 5) You should also visit: Meštrović Museum; Croatian National Theater; Sulphur Baths; Jupiter's Temple, Statue of Grgur Ninski; Varoš; Voćni Trg (Fruit Square)…

Croatia is rich with national parks. Close to Split there's national park Krka. You can get to Krka from Split in the summer season by taking a direct bus to Skradin – one of the entrances of the park.  Just make sure to check out the timetable online. If you travel in your own car you can drive either on the highway or on the Jadranska magistrala.  If you choose highway you go from access point in Dugopolje to exit point Skradin. Option 2 is to follow Šibenik on the Jadranska magistrala and you'll get to Skradin with the help of road signs. If you don't have your own car you can rent one in Split.  There are also several excursion programs direct from Split (Redono; Bus Croatia; Portal; Adriatia Transfer).

Moving around in Split is not so complicated.  Most of the places tourists visit are in the old part of the city. You can go on foot, or take a bus or taxi if you want.   Just relax and enjoy the smells and sound of Dalmatia. Make sure to visit a konoba while listening to klapa, eating great food and drinking good wine.
