The $100 Billion Summer Vacation

By the time the summer's over, Americans will have spent upwards of $100 billion on summer vacation, topping the $2,000 apiece mark for the first time since the survey started in 2010, according to Allianz's Vacation Confidence Index.

And since Americans are notorious for leaving a lot of their vacation time on the table, or perhaps desk, that means some people are spending way more than that on cruises, tours of Europe, weeks on the beach, in the mountains, or even in Sin City.

Allianz, which is in the travel insurance business, says that 42% of Americans are confident they'll take a summer vacation, up from 40% last year, while 52% are fairly sure they are going nowhere, for reasons of money, time off, or saving for a future dream vacation.
