That's a real roadblock (50,000 pounds of it)!

A combination of bad driving and high-tech safety left German authorities with a 23-tonne roadblock on the Autobahn near Dellenburg, Hesse last Thursday.

The block had been strapped to the bed of a hauler truck; when a car and a truck cut in front of it to enter the highway, the heavy-hauler's automatic brakes kicked in and prevented a collision. That would be good, except that the sudden deceleration caused the block to slide off the end of the truck and continue for about 70 metres on momentum.

Police are now looking for the two drivers who caused the incident, and who may be charged; they are also investigating whether the driver of the hauler failed to sufficiently secure the block on the vehicle, or whether the forces of nature were just too strong in the sudden deceleration.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
