The small city of Lufkin, Texas, is home to one of the largest museums dedicated to the lumber industry in the United States. It is the only museum of its kind in the state.
And, the Texas Forestry Museum is in the perfect location. The city is surrounded by the Pineywoods, including Davy Crocket and Angelina National Forests.
It is an excellent place for families, even with small children. Here every one learns about growing trees, harvesting trees, transporting trees, processing trees, and using trees daily. Featured exhibits include Sawmill Town, Paper Mill, Money Trees, logging train, fire tower, and Urban Wildscape Trail.
The Texas Forestry Association began collecting logging relics and expressed interest in establishing a forestry museum in East Texas in the 1950s. Less than a decade later, a groundbreaking ceremony served as the beginning of the educational and fun destination in the city.
Historic photos line the walls, including the men who worked in the lumber camps and their families. Company towns attracted families by providing housing, education, and health care.
It also focuses on the present and future of the Pineywoods, the complexities of the natural resource, and the role of forest management practices.
The last large room of the museum features Timbertown, an area designed for children. The Sawmill House helps teach children what life was like for a logger at home in the early 1900's including period-specific items such as clothing, toys, and household items.
A large cardboard cutout honors Smokey the Bear and is located beside a pretend fire tower. Children can play games and design their own railroad.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, closed on major holidays. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated.
