Buddhist temples in western Japan are a new focus for travelers interested in experiencing and learning about traditional culture, and a new industry is growing around it to serve the visitors.
Traditionally, temples have maintained a 'shukubo,' or lodging house for monks and worshippers, and some of these have been accommodating foreign visitors. Now, one of Japan's major building companies is opening a shukubo-style guesthouse specifically for them (above).
Located in Osaka's Tennoji Ward, which has many temples, the 26-room facility will be run by a company specializing in temple lodging and programs. They will include traditional cultural activities associated with temples such as shakyo, or transcribing scriptures, Zen meditation and special Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
Some critics have opposed the idea, believing it will commercialize what should be spiritual experiences, but some temples welcome it as a way to find financial support in areas where temples are struggling.
