Until recently I had always thought that the southernmost point in mainland Europe was Gibraltar. However, whilst Gibraltar is quite close to the southern tip of the continent, the Spanish town of Tarifa is even further south. The ceramic sign pictured above is situated next to the causeway which connects the town to a little islet just offshore. As the photo is probably too small to make out the text properly, I have added enlarged versions of its left and right parts.
Tarifa sits almost exactly on the 36th parallel and is the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. The latter lies to the left of the causeway and the former to the right. Tangier is just across the waters.

A significant geographical landmark, but not all that thrilling visually - I agree. Nevertheless, the town is definitely worth a visit. Below are a few more photos to illustrate the point.
