Swiss rail chief 'ashamed' on refunds

Swiss Federal Railways chief Andreas Meyer is so sorry about late trains that he's thinking about full refunds for passengers whose trains arrive late.

“Sometimes I am almost ashamed,” he told CH Media in an interview, because passengers get a maximum refund of 10-15 francs when trains are over an hour late. For shorter delays, it's often no more than a voucher for free coffee as an apology.

His concern comes after SBB slipped from 87.4% on-time arrival to 86%, still one of Europe's best. Any plans for bigger refunds would have to be approved by the Swiss parliament, which has previously considered a proposal for 25% refund after an hour and 50% after two hours.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
