While on a Viking Orion shore excursion, I visited St. George, a lovely community located in the far eastern end of Bermuda. One of the most visited attractions here is St. Peter's Church.
Established in 1612, it is the oldest Anglican Church outside the British Isles and the oldest Protestant church in continuous use in the New World. The church is part of the St. George UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the heart of town, it is a symbol of history and religion. Climbing up several steps, I entered the understated gray and white church.
Inside I found the original altar, an 18th-century throne salvaged from a shipwreck, and communion silver from the 1600s. After touring the church's interior, I walked around the churchyard where grave markers date to the beginning of the church's centuries-old history.
The church is also a symbol of Bermuda. It has withstood centuries of storms, including hurricanes, giving hope to the citizens of this picturesque town.
