Spring in Lake Louise

Winter lingers high in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.  Even in early July patches of snow persist around Lake Louise, which rests at 1,750 meters (5,741 feet).   Given this altitude and how far north the lake is, this should be no great surprise, but I was astonished the first time I was up here in late spring to see this scene.

These photos were taken this past May.  The lake is still completely covered with snow and ice, except by its outflow at Louise Creek.

Regardless of the time of year, I think it's one of the prettiest lakes in the world.
