This summer marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when despite overwhelming odds, Britain's Royal Air Force fended off massive attacks by the German Luftwaffe. The battle, which took place almost daily between early July and the end of October 1940, will be commemorated by a series of events, including an airshow in September.
The big feature of the show will be a flyby and aerobatics by a squadron of 20 World War II Spitfire fighter planes, flying from the RAF Duxford field, then a key fighter base and today one of the five sites of the Imperial War Museum.
Living history programs will recreate the daily life of flieers, mechanics and others at the base, with audio memories and more. Other exhibits will highlight the arrival of the first Spitfires, the importance of early radar stations, and more. The airshow itself will take place from 2-5:30 pm September 19-20th.
