Spinning a Mill into a Hotel

I always appreciate historic hotels and ones created out of buildings originally constructed for another purpose.

In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, I had the opportunity to stay at The Historic Brookstown Inn 1837. It began as the Salem Manufacturing Company and was one of the first mills in the south to utilize electric lighting. Today there are 70 guest rooms.

The Arista Mill complex is the oldest physical reminder of forgotten elements in the history of Winston-Salem. Although the city is closely associated with tobacco, its industrial foundations were laid by the textile industry.

By preserving the original structure of the building, the Inn's interior features tall ceilings, original wooden beams, exposed brick and newly refinished historic pine wood floors in the lobby.

Also within walking distance is Willow's Bistro. The restaurant works closely with local farms and produce companies to source the freshest, locally grown and organic products available to provide an authentic farm-to-table experience. The atmosphere is friendly and the food delicious.

My accommodations and Willow's Bistro were a great start to a fantastic stay in this friendly Southern city.
