Spain mandates doggy bags

Spain's canine crowd (or the residents and visitors who can't finish a meal) will soon benefit from a new Spanish law that will make doggy bags the done thing.

The law, intended to curb food waste, also requires all companies in the 'food chain' to develop plans to save food by donating what's fit for human consumption but nearing expiration date, and arranging disposal for animal feed or other use for what isn't fit. It's estimated that per capita food waste from restaurants and stores is around 31 kilos per year.

Restaurants will be required to offer patrons the option of taking the leftovers home, and if they accept, to pack it for them in recyclable or reusable packaging. Many restaurants will already supply containers if asked, but they are often styrofoam.

Violations carry hefty fines starting at €2000 and going up as high as €500,000 for large operations with "very serious" food waste.

France and Italy, among others, have also taken legal action against food waste in recent years.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
