Spain has a full calendar of festivals

It's only a month or so to Carnival in Spain, celebrated with festivals in many cities, and that's only one of a year of special celebrations that also include religious observances, wine festivals, and, of course, the annual Tomatina food fight.

TheLocal.es has compiled a colorful list of a dozen of the best for you to see and consider visiting.

Among them, the fiery event shown above, in Sagunto, in the Valencia region. Honoring St. Joseph, patron of carpenters, it's marked by making huge papier-mache caricatures of politicians and other popular (or unpopular) figures. After a big parade, they're fed to a bonfire amid fireworks. This one has UNESCO cultural heritage status.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
