Spain: Bread with a grain of salt

Or rather, with fewer grains of salt. A new Spanish law that took effect earlier this month limits the salt content in bread, and thereby, for some at least, making for a blander slice.

It's the last part of a ground-breaking bread quality standard issued by royal decree in 2019 and in effect as of last July; the limit on salt to no more than 1.66 grams of salt in 100 grams of bread was postponed to allow time for labeling changes.

The goal of the change was to bring Spanish salt consumption in line with World Health Organization recommendations that recommends keeping salt intake per person under 5 grams per day. According to Spanish health authorities, Spaniards consumer an average of 9.8 grams of salt a day, implicated in high blood pressure and other concerns.

In addition to regulating salt content, Spain is also offering reduced VAT rates on healthier foods in hopes of spurring more change to better choices.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
