Something New: Wait-listed for a credit card!

Many travelers have found themselves wait-listed for a popular flight; it usually comes with nail-biting anxiety. But few if any have been wait-listed for a credit card, and it turns out that experience comes with a 10,000-point bonus.

Chase is taking wait-list applications for a new credit card it will issue in the fall, co-branded with Air Canada, whose new Aeroplan loyalty scheme started up last fall. Those who sign up in advance will be awarded the extra points when the card is issued.

In the meantime, starting now, Chase Ultimate Rewards Points is adding Aeroplan as a transfer partner, meaning existing Chase cardholders can trade for Aeroplan points to book Air Canada flights.

No big announcement yet of what perks or sign-up bonus will go with the card when it is issued; part of the waitlist strategy is to determine how much interest the card draws, allowing Chase to find a sweet spot that draws customers without being, perhaps, over-generous.

Chase says the card is aimed at Americans with ties to Canada or living near the borders, a strategy it also follows with co-brand cards for British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
