The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's main building on the Mall in Washington is re-opening, at least partly, in October after four years of renovation and redesign.
The October 14 re-opening will feature eight new exhibitions in the western end of its building, along with its planetarium and space-themed Mars Cafe. The rest of the museum will re-open in stages over the next two years, with additional galleries and a new entrance as well the return of favorite exhibits.
Among the exhibits back on show in the first stage of re-opening are the Apollo 11 command module and the 1903 Wright Brothers biplane that marks the start of aviation. Tickets for the museum are free, but must be reserved online for timed slots. They're reservable starting September 14 on the museum's website.
