Slim airline seats unpopular

Airlines are excited about installing new slimmer seats (those with a thinner back cushion) because they can maintain economy passenger's personal space while allowing the airline to add more rows of seats.  A survey by TripAdvisor showed that many passengers found these seats less comfortable than traditional airline seats.   More here in this LA Times article.

That's an interesting article...especially the part about United finding that passengers like the new seats better as time goes on.

I have very limited experience with this (one flight on TAP with them installed) and frankly, they didn't feel more or less cushiony than any others. I just don't think thickness has anything to do with comfort; it's the density of the material used. And frankly, two extra inches for legs...that's a win.

At least until the airlines start moving the slim-line seats closer...

I think the intent of a lot of the airlines is to move the rows closer together, PHeymont, but give the illusion that you still have the same amount of space.  They can squeeze 2-3 extra rows into a plane (depending on the type), so that's at least 12 or so extra seats for sale.

But if they genuinely use it to enhance personal space, all the better!

Well, that's the question. Initially they are saying this is how we can keep 32" and still add seats. Next year, they may ask what's wrong with 30". Just as banks first encouraged ATM use go reduce cost of tellers...and then, when that saving was realized, began charging for their use.
