Sleepable car hits the road in Japan

A Japanese car rental company is offering a 'sleepable car' for when you can't find budget accommodations along the road, or want to travel sparser areas of the country.

Surprisingly, it's not what you usually think of first, a big Winnebago. Niconico Rentacar is offering a two-person sleeper built into a Daihatsu Wake, which is a 'kei' car—the smallest cars licensed for Japan's roads. Turns out, with a little work, it can actually fit a full-size bed.

Of course, unlike a hotel, it doesn't supply bath or toilet. But at about $95 for two days and a night and $75 each for additional nights, you can be creative.

Oh, and for those of us who remember the Nash Ramblers of the 1950s with the fold-flat seats: Yes, it is smaller. And yes, it can be used for all the purposes we used or imagined using the Rambler.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
