The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is planning what it says will be the largest-ever exhibition of the works of 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, starting in Spring 2023.
Only 35 known paintings by Vermeer exist, and only seven are in Dutch possession, mainly at the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. Other paintings that will be included include loans from other museums and private collections. A 1996 exhibition at the Mauritshuis included 23, but Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits says this show will include more, although the final number is not yet known.
Vermeer worked in Delft and is best known for tranquil indoor domestic scenes and a pioneering use of light. Dibbits said that the two museums are working closely with a group of curators, restorers and natural scientists to examine the seven that are in Dutch hands to learn more about them ahead of the show.
