Return (limited) of the 20th Century Limited

Starting in June, two cars that were once part of the 20th Century Limited—"The Most Famous Train in the World" it used to be said—will join Amtrak service between New York and Albany.

Tickets for the excursions, operated by the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, go on sale next week, with seats available on select Friday-Sunday dates in June, September and October. Unlike the original 20th Century, which started from Grand Central Terminal, these trips run from Penn Station.

The cars will be operated as part of Amtrak Empire Service, using Hickory Creek, the only remaining restored passenger car from the 20th Century, built in 1948, and Tavern-Lounge Car #43, built a decade earlier. Passengers on Hickory Creek at $349 for the round trip get a four-course meal with beer and wine, while seats in the Tavern-Lounge go for $143 and include a sandwich buffet, sides, and permission to BYOB.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
