REAL ID getting closer to real at America's airports

Warning posters are going up at airports across America this week, reminding passengers that the countdown has started to the January 22, 2018 deadline for strict enforcement of the REAL ID act.

The law, passed 2005 but delayed for several years due to issues over privacy and cost, requires airline passengers to have government-issued ID that meets a set of enhanced security standards, and whose information is available, through the states, to the Department of Homeland Security and TSA.

States have been granted extensions for compliance, but a number of states have not asked for extensions or have let them run out. Passengers from those states will need to use a passport or other compliant ID after January 2018. Those from compliant or extended states can continue to use their current licenses, but only up to January 2020, when all must comply.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
