A London civil servant who describes himself as a 'timetables nerd' has set what would undoubtedly be a record if anyone were keeping track of such feats by traveling as far as he could by train within 24 hours, starting at London's St Pancras station.
Jo Kibble, who works for the Ealing Council, is not a stranger to planning this kind of thing; last year, missing international travel, he answered the question 'how far can you go by bus in 24 hours?' by taking a series of buses from London to Morecambe, Lancashire, 260 miles away.
On the rail trip, he used nine different trains through four countries to reach Bovo Marina in southern Italy, a town that is in Italy but still speaks the Greek of its ancient conquerors. Kibble said he spent hours working on timetables for both trips, figuring the theoretical best routes.
