Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Dec. 7, 2013: Car Ferry, Suez Canal

Not surprisingly, since most of the population of Egypt is on the west side of the Suez Canal, there are few crossing points along it’s length.  I spent hours at the windows of my cabin on a container ship taking pictures of the mostly small communities along the bank.  Fortunately I was on the port side of the ship as we headed toward the Mediterranean or would have had a view largely of sand.

Given that most of the traffic is on the water, crossings by water were no surprise.  This car ferry was loaded and ready to go.  Ships in the canal are taken through by pilots in convoys in alternating directions and run fairly close together.  Since I didn’t see the ferry cross I have no idea at what point in the traffic it might make a run for it.  It seems to me that I have a perfectly good excuse now to go back, sit on that bank and find out.  I'll let you know.
