Paris is passing a new law to help it enforce the rules on short-term rental sites such as Airbnb, by requiring owners to register their properties before being allowed to list them.
Although French law now allows an apartment owner to rent out to visitors for up to 120 days in a year, up to now there has been no way for the government to track the data. That will now be possible.
In addition, under the new rules, rental income will now be considered professional income, and will be subject to taxation. The stakes in all this are sizable: Paris is a top Airbnb city, with over 65,000 listings.
