Paris taking next steps against traffic

Little by little, central Paris has become more of a hike-and-bike zone, with some highways and major streets barred to vehicle traffic, and the City Council is now looking to make the area even less friendly to cars.

The new plan isn't a total ban, but would limit traffic to b6uses, taxis, delivery trucks and people who live or work in the 'low-traffic' zone, which would include the 1st through 4th arrondissements and the northern parts of the 5th, 6th and 7th along the Left Bank of the Seine.

Before a final decision is made, the city will be conducting a process of consultation with people living in the zone, although with locals exempt, it may be popular. Mayor Anne Hidalgo's continuing interest in making the city more bicycle friendly is also connected to the city's need to meet European air pollution standards, which it has been under pressure to do.
