Paris's new rental law in effect

The new registration rules for short-term rentals in Paris took effect Friday, with all agencies, such as Airbnb, HomeAway and others required to display an apartment's rental registration number in listings.

The listings opened in October, and as of Friday are mandatory for all short-term rentals in the city, where apartment owners are allowed to rent their primary residences for up to 120 days over the course of a year.

The rule not only gives city agencies the ability to monitor legal and illegal rentals, but also will give landlords a tool to control unapproved subletting by tenants.

It's too soon to tell what effect this will have on how many apartments will be legally available, but an estimate last year was that 44% of properties in France listed on Airbnb were permanently available for short-term rental, and many of those may disappear.
