Paris orders electric buses to fight smog

Paris, where air quality has become a major quality-of-life issue, has committed to replacing its mainly-diesel bus fleet with electric and other low-emission vehicles. Just this week, the city placed an order for 800 new electric buses.

The plan is for all city buses—there are over 4,000 in the fleet—to be electric, hybrid or running on biofuels by 2025, with most of the change-over happening by the time of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The city's fleet now includes 950 hybrids, 140 that run on bio-fuel and 83 electrics.

The city's anti-smog plans also include getting diesel-powered cars out of the city by 2025. In addition, the mayor has said the city will consider making public transportation free to get more cars off the roads.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
